Wendy Hopkins says, “It seems like just yesterday that we got started … and what an incredible start it was. I’m in business only because my community got behind me. They didn’t just support me with words; they supported me with funding as well. She explained, “I was a single mother with three children. My clients at the salon where I worked were with me for a long time – many years – and they knew that I wanted more than anything to open my own salon. I always had this vision of a place that wasn’t only inviting and comfortable for guests, but also for the employees. A place where everyone was on the same team who shared the same passion. It wasn’t easy to get funding. In fact, the banks turned me down. When I thought I had no options left, a client suggested this ‘crazy’ idea and helped me write a letter asking for $200 in exchange for a pre-paid gift certificate to my salon”.
That cash provided Wendy with the means to get a lease on a salon and remodel the space with two stylist stations. While it took two years for her grand opening, she took her first appointment in 2003 as a sole business owner. It was just Wendy in the beginning, but within six months she added a stylist and then two more. Three years later, she returned to the bank that wouldn’t give her a loan and obtained a mortgage on the business condo where the salon is located!
Wendy says both she and the business have evolved since her early days. “Education has become hugely important to me. I have always been open to learning more about my craft. I don’t want to become stagnant. I love what I do and I want to make sure I remain passionate and current.”
She has also evolved as a manager. She says, “I know it is better to treat employees as team members. I don’t always run the show … I get input from everyone. They have good ideas. Our team shares a philosophy about what we do and how we treat our guests. It is important that we always remember to listen to our clients and work together with them to deliver the best hair care and style for each individual. We always want to be professional, friendly, and to create an inviting and fun atmosphere.”
